What is Biodegradable materials

Definition of bioplastics: if plastics are bio based, they are defined as bioplastics, biodegradable, or both. Bio base refers to that the product (part) comes from biomass (plant). Bioplastics come from corn, sugarcane or cellulose. The biodegradation of bioplastics depends on its chemical structure. For example, 100% bio based, bioplastics are not necessarily biodegradable.
Biodegradable plastics are plastics that can be decomposed by the action of living organisms, usually microbes, into water, carbon dioxide, and biomass.Biodegradable plastics are commonly produced with renewable raw materials, micro-organisms, petrochemicals, or combinations of all three.
While the words “bioplastic” and “biodegradable plastic” are similar, they are not synonymous. Not all bioplastics are biodegradable.
Biodegradation is a chemical process in which microorganisms available in the environment convert substances into natural substances such as water, carbon dioxide and compost (without artificial additives). The biodegradation process depends on the surrounding environmental conditions (e.g. location or temperature), material and application.

Renewable energy polymers can be divided into starch polymers, polylactic acid (PLA) PHB polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) cellulose polymers.

The global output of bioplastics will be 2.11 million tons in 2019 and 2.43 million tons in 2024, which is expected to increase slightly. Compared with the global output of more than 359 million per year / ton of plastics, it still accounts for a small proportion. Similar plastic packaging (rigid and flexible) dominated global bioplastics production capacity, with more than half (53%) in the entire bioplastics market last year.

The idea behind bio based polymers is to replace fossil carbon with renewable and environmentally friendly resources (sugar in plants), in other words, to produce polymers from renewable natural resources, and to rapidly decompose packaging and return to nature.
